Swimming with Fishes
Swimming with the Fishes began in 2002 and continues. Swimming includes paintings and sculptures. Since I began creating art,I have been fascinated, some would say obsessed, with decay, death and regeneration. Dead fish vividly reflect their corporeal existence; they leave behind a skin, scales, which will eventually decompose and depart into dust.
Dead fish are distant from us,from our concept of mortality, and, yet, death being a primal fear, the dead fish remind us where the fish go, we shall surely follow. One wants to look away, avoid, but cannot. Such as with our own mortality. I create the uncreating, the decomposing, and give permanence to passing. Dead fish are not only transforming but are being transformed into other elements.
Intrinsic to the installation is the link between the health of fish and our environment. If we do not care for our environment, our fish, we will pass. What will we leave? Dead fish are subjects, and a metaphor for our own fragile existence
