The Emerald Ash Borer has decimated ash trees. Dead ash litter our forests. The iridescent beetle eats grooves in the interior bark of the trees, leaving it dying. These sculptures are made from the bark of dead ash. Examining the dead ash bark, I noticed a calligraphic beauty to the patterns in the bark. The bark is almost speaking of the tragedy, of the intricacy of life and death. My purpose with this work is to give honor to the passing of the trees and create conversation regarding this environmental disaster.
